Glass key, PTFE key and needle valve
These are the ordinary meanings of the three patterns, given so that a buyer can specify correctly. What is supplied against any line should still be confirmed with the company.
A ground glass key is a tapered glass plug seated in a matching ground barrel. It is turned by hand and normally requires a film of stopcock grease to seal and to move freely, which means the grease has to be compatible with whatever passes through the valve and has to be renewed. A PTFE key is a moulded plastic plug used without grease, usually retained by a nut, and it avoids both the greasing routine and the risk of a glass key seizing in the barrel after standing; it is generally chosen where grease would contaminate the sample.
