What the international standard for beakers requires

Laboratory beakers are covered by ISO 3819:2015, Laboratory glassware — Beakers, which replaced the 1985 first edition. It specifies an internationally acceptable series of glass beakers, and it is the reference a procurement team can quote in a tender document instead of describing a beaker in their own words. These are its requirements, and what each one means on a purchase order:

Type	The standard covers three types — low-form with spout, thick-walled low-form with spout, and tall-form with spout. State which type is required for each line.
Nominal capacity	The standard sets the capacity series: low-form from 5 ml to 10,000 ml; thick-walled low-form from 150 ml to 5,000 ml; tall-form from 50 ml to 5,000 ml. Order against the series rather than describing a size.
Material	Borosilicate glass 3.3 in accordance with ISO 3585, free from harmful residual strain and from visible defects.
Dimensions	External diameter, overall height and minimum wall thickness are tabulated in the standard for each nominal capacity, with a tolerance on external diameter of ±5%. Ask for the supplier's figures against those tables.
Base junction radius	Beakers of 250 ml and above require an external radius between base and side of 10% to 20% of the external diameter; below 250 ml, a minimum of 5%. This is what stops the corner becoming a stress point in heating.
Brim	The side is flared near the brim, with brim diameter 5% to 15% greater than the body diameter, and the brim edge finished parallel to the base.
Spout	The spout must pour a regular stream clear of the side of the beaker; when the beaker is overfilled on a level surface, the water must overflow from the spout first.
Base	Stable on a horizontal surface, without rocking.
Graduation	A volumetric scale is optional under the standard. If a graduated beaker is required, state it and state the accuracy expected.
Thermal shock resistance	Specified by the standard and tested in accordance with ISO 718. State that the test result is required with the consignment.
Marking	Permanent marking of the nominal capacity, the maker's or vendor's name or mark, and the glass type, plus a marking area that takes pencil.

The marking requirement is the one most often left off an enquiry and the one that costs most later. A beaker that arrives without a permanently marked capacity and glass type cannot be sorted, audited or reordered from the item itself — the information exists only on the paperwork, and the paperwork and the glass separate the first time a store is reorganised.

Beyond the standard: what else belongs on a beaker enquiry

• Which items in the order are glass and which are not. Measuring jugs and similar vessels are often supplied in polypropylene rather than glass, and they are not within the scope of a glass beaker standard.
• Whether a beaker without a spout is acceptable. All three types in ISO 3819 have a spout. A beaker specified without one falls outside the standard's series, so its dimensions and tolerances are not covered by it and must be agreed separately.
• Batch identification. Ask how a delivered batch can be traced back to a production record, particularly on institutional orders delivered in stages.
• Packing for export. Beakers are a high-breakage line. Agree the inner packing, carton specification and the procedure for replacing breakage found on arrival, and put it on the order rather than the packing list.
• Replacement and resupply. For a teaching laboratory, the ability to reorder a single capacity in small quantities matters more than the price of the first consignment.

All three kinds of beakers specified in ISO 3819 include a spout, while spout and overflow specifications form part of the criteria for conformance with this standard. The absence of a spout in a beaker means that it is not within the scope of this series of beakers, and therefore does not comply with its criteria for size and tolerances.
