What Class A and Class B actually mean

Accuracy class is a tolerance grade, not a quality grade. The ASTM specification for laboratory glass volumetric flasks, ASTM E288, defines the two grades in current use:

Two consequences follow. First, because a Class B flask need not carry any class marking, a flask arriving with no letter on it is not evidence of anything — it may be Class B, or it may be an unmarked Class A. The order and the packing documentation are what establish which was supplied. Second, because Class B tolerance is defined as twice Class A, the two are not interchangeable in a method that specifies a tolerance: doubling the permitted volumetric error changes the result, not just the paperwork.

The same specification notes that micro volumetric flasks from 1 mL to 25 mL are covered by a separate ASTM specification, so an enquiry for small-capacity precision flasks should say which basis is required.

What "serialized" and "unserialized" mean on a flask order

A serialized flask carries an individual identification number marked on the glass; an unserialized flask does not. Under ASTM E288 that number is optional even for Class A, which is why both versions exist in the same class.

The number matters when a certificate does. An individual calibration or works certificate refers to one specific flask, and the serial number is what ties the certificate to the item on the bench. Without it, a certificate can only describe a batch — which is usually acceptable for teaching work and usually not acceptable in an accredited laboratory, a validated pharmaceutical method or an audited quality system. Decide which you need before ordering, because a flask cannot be serialized after the fact.

State it explicitly on the enquiry: Class A, serialized, with individual certificate is a different product and a different price from Class A, unserialized, even when both are listed under similar names.

What to state on a volumetric flask enquiry

  • Capacity and quantity for each capacity — a mixed order is several production runs, not one.
  • Class A or Class B, and the tolerance basis if a specific specification is required by your method or tender.
  • Serialized or unserialized, and whether an individual certificate is required with each flask.
  • Closure — the listings distinguish penny-head, hollow glass, polyethylene, PE, PTFE and snap-cap closures. Closure material decides chemical compatibility and whether the flask can be stoppered for storage.
  • Clear or amber — amber construction is for light-sensitive solutions; specify it where the method requires protection from light.
  • Material — the volumetric range includes a polypropylene flask alongside the glass ones. A glass volumetric specification does not apply to a plastic flask, so if a specification is being quoted, confirm the material it is being applied to.

Frequently asked questions

Can Class B flasks be substituted for Class A on a tender line?

Not without the buyer's agreement. Class B tolerance is defined as twice the Class A range for the same nominal capacity, so a substitution changes the permitted volumetric error. If a tender line says Class A, treat it as a specification rather than a preference.

Does a Class A flask always carry a certificate?

No. Class A describes the tolerance grade and requires the letter "A" to be marked; it does not by itself mean an individual certificate is supplied. Ask for the certificate separately, and ask whether it is a batch document or an individual one tied to a serial number.
